Trove – The Grind Is Real

Trove

So two months ago my son finally became sick of Minecraft and Roblox. Searching for another free to play child friendly game lead me directly to Trove.
Not sure what the game was like I jumped on to make sure it was 5yo friendly and to make sure chat wasnt filled with bad language. Luckily the chat was fine (censored) and the violence isnt too much. Unfortunately I started a class thinking you could just chop and change to any class freely but unfortunately this is not the case.  You only get one class and as Trove is F2P you need to pay to unlock new classes. You can use a referral code and you will get a free class coin (under Mastery Rank 20). You also get one for Mastery rank 3 & 25 so you can get 4 classes for free but would need to buy any more you want.

Only a few days in and my son was enjoying the game and so I started to do what I do on all the games he plays,  I would grind for an hour a night to make sure he had what he needed to do what he wanted freely with the hour a day I let him play. This was going very well and so I bought the Essential Pack which comes with a lot

  • 10 Class Coins
  • Fire Wings
  • Trovian Supercycle mount
  • S.S. Trovian ship
  • 10x Mount Unlocker
  • Dragon Coin Tome
  • Jade Clover Tome
  • 20,000 Cubits
  • 15 Days of Patron
  • Trove Topper
  • 100 Bombs

it cost £15 so was a bargain for what you get and supports the game as its F2P. With that pack we managed to unlock 14 characters in total which I think left us with 1 which still needs unlock.
While grinding I pursueded a few online friends to join me but that was short lived as the game isn’t really appealing to them.

The grind has now become more around aiming for certain things I like rather then things my son needs. I have now gathered enough essential resources to start aiming for legendary mounts (Dragons) and upgrading to stellar weapons. My son is happy to unbox the free drops from mobs and having fun smashing the land.

Payday 2 – Still A Hit Or Now A Miss

    image

With the constant updates to Payday 2 there isn’t much the game doesn’t have to offer with the randomly generated missions and a good selection of difficulty it can cater for players of all skill levels. I have been away from the game for a few months now but came back with the additions of the safes and drills. I was disappointed that they added another cost to the game although it is up to the individual whether or not to buy drills to open the skin safes. The only positive is you can actually get drills as drops so don’t actually need to spend cash. The main issue I have is you buy the Base game without any dlc and there isn’t much game you add all the DLC which adds to the cost and you have a awesome game. Adding skins is something they do in free to play games like LoL, DOTA and Dirty Bomb to generate revenue.

Payday 2 – OMG Tabula Rasa

    image

After playing for a few days and getting a little bored me and Chuck decided to try for a few achievements. Jokingly Chuck starts a Hoxton Breakout and we brought the required guns for Tabula Rasa.

    image

We thought hey let’s see how hard this is, well it was probably the hardest job we have ever done on Payday 2. Numerous tries got us that little bit closer each time, making each try seen that little bit easier. It was just me Chuck and our two bullet sponge AI. Getting up to day 2 seemed to be the hardest part, pushing the car as far forward as possible and as fast as possible was the best way the further forward the car got the less AI spawned behind meaning it was just a hard crawl the the underground car park. We had to take it in turns at collecting ammo so that we both had a chance at fighting. Numerous times we both got downed and either had to try and get the other up or hope the AI did. Once inside the underground car park we had to search for the computer to hack and lower the bollards, simple and straightforward as we both had each others back. Day 2 was still tough but I felt it was less difficult then Day 1, we used the Security Card glitch which meant twice as many cards and opened the armoury and infirmary first. It was only difficult due to the running between objectives but we totally locked down the main room so only had to watch the balconies.

Now we did get the achievement but the last 15 minutes was a nail biter. I was down to my last down and Chuck was just put put in jail. We had made it all the way up to the last hack it was looking like another failed attempt. Hoxton had just finished the hack and I jumped into the last room to recover the server. The final assault had started and I was stuck, with nowhere to go I stuck to the back of the room and hoped the assault would end. Unfortunately it was the final and everlasting assault, I waited until there was a small break and made my way to you getaway vehicle. On my way I was tagged and down to 1 hit, I dropped the server and waited for my shield to recover. With two sniper waiting with aim at my exit Hall I had to make a mad dash to the infirmary. Barely making it to the infirmary I recovered my health, popped my head out and took out the snipers. I then had to creep back to the server and try and make my way to the exit door. Rushing down I made it to the final door and  setup the drill leaving the AI to take all the damage while I hid in a corner. I had almost no ammo and a 2 minute wait, trying to keep the AI covered and give as much damage as possible once the door was open I finally made it to the escape vehicle and we both got the achievement.

H1Z1 – Battleroyal Yey or Ney

    image

So the Battleroyale game mode has had great success with many games. Arma 3 and H1Z1 have official modes with CSGO and Garry’s mod having unofficial versions. The aim is to find loot and kill everyone and you win by being the last survivor. I had played the Arma 3 version during its early days and i was lucky if I could manage to find any loot let alone kill anyone. Last weekend a friend of mine asked if I wanted to play as a coop team on the H1Z1 version. On the H1Z1 version you can play solo or as a team of 2 or 5. We only had 3 so each time we got filled with others who usually did there own thing.

My first 3 games started bad I was unable to find any loot and was struggling to escape anyone. I soon found my first weapon 3 games in a recurve bow needless to say I lasted about 4 minutes. I had played so little H1Z1 that I wasn’t expecting much pro gaming from myself. Further into my night and a few games in we started doing average finding each other getting well looted but then we all noticed the same thing. The guns are so inaccurate hit markers are non existent, as an example I shot someone twice and the only part of him I could see was his head I saw blood spatter and I thought to myself how isn’t he dead the guy runs out of cover and kills me and my two buddy’s and was on 86hp (after 2 headshots). We noticed this more and more as the night went on shotgun to the back and they kept running we got breathed on too hard and it was game over. I also noticed the sounds causing confusion most of the night foot steps above shot from below.

These are the only two problems I had with the game mode so far but made the night a little less enjoyable. There was a few occasions I shot people with a shotgun from a mile away and got the kill so swings and roundabouts.

TERA – My Kind of MMO

    image

So I’m not the biggest fan of MMO’s I subscribed to WoW for about 90 days and played about 7. Paid for 120 days on Wild Star and played about 30. And then one game that I thought had put me off for good Archeage, this game fills me with so much hate it makes me sick. I paid for a Founder pack which was very expensive £120+. I love the Alpha and the Beta no connection issues and was fun to play, unfortunately that was short lived. Before release founder pack players received a 7 day grace period before everyone else. I played most nights for the full week, then came the non Founders. I was unable to connect to the server I had played on for a week and the Dev’s answer was start a new character with hours of waiting for little gameplay I gave up. That was week 2 for me, so my patron status was unused for the free days I got with my Founders Pack. That was it until a few weeks ago when I finally started playing again. Much to my disappointment most quests I had started were in completable I found this out after a week of grinding. To make matters worse I hit a wall with Labour points I had non and received so little I was unable to complete quests without standing around. That was the final straw and I uninstalled the game I will never pay a sub for a game and probably never buy a founder pack for any other games due to the disappointment of Archeage.

I thought that was it for me and MMO’s until I was asked to jump on TERA. It was labeled free 2 play so I thought a sub would be needed but 3+ weeks on and I’m still loving it. I have probably spent around £30+ on it but that was not needed. This game is totally free to play you can do all quests and the only benefit of having elite (Premium) is a few savings and daily drops. I received 3 days of Elite for free and although it was great and added quickness to the game I feel it took away the grind which makes most MMO’s. I can say if you are looking for an actual free 2 play MMO look no further then TERA. I have a Level 50 and Level 30 character and it has been enjoyable leveling then both.

TERA is my flavour of MMO its easy going and fun to play. There is no actual cost although if you are like me and like to reward devs of free 2 play games then little cost. It’s popular and cater for both PVE or PVP, the auction house is fun and you can find some great bargains. Game play is on par with some of the top end MMO’s and playing or guilding with friends is easy.

    Archeage – I Give Up

    image

Last night I got home from work and thought I would play Archeage for an hour. Turns out I only had enough labour points to complete 3 quests (move to and from 3 places) and play for around 20 minutes. A grand total of 30 labour points was acquired in the time I played and was spent in minutes. This game is impossible to play without patron status, you need labour points to complete half of the quests. You gain 5 labour points every 5 minutes and no labour points when offline meaning the 30+ players you see in cities are actually just accumulating labour points while AFK. The servers must be full of non playing players sitting AFK waiting to have enough labour points to do anything. I understand this game needs subscribers to make money, but the free to play gamers literally can’t play this game without hitting a wall. If Patrons/subscribers made double labour then free and with the already additions of housing and ship/sailing that should make it still worth the sub. But the free to play gamers should still make labour points when offline.

I have literally given up on Archeage, I’m now spending money and time on TERA it’s free but fun to play. There is no real pay2win or pay2play wall like most F2P.

    A Week Of MMO’s

I took last week of work with work being so busy and me needing a break. The week before my mate was playing TERA so I downloaded it and gave it a go. This was the start of my MMO week as we played it most of the weekend. So on Tuesday once I dropped my son off at school I decided to jump on Archeage, I paid £100+ for the founder pack and enjoyed the Alpha and Beta. Unfortunately after the one week leeway the founder pack holders had before full release I was unable to join the server to continue with my character and was told just to start a new character on a different server. This wasn’t an option in my opinion so I never really played Archeage again. That said I played for hours on Tuesday collecting items and continuing my quests I had started all them months ago. Later in the day I jumped on TERA with my mate and we continued with our characters, we both started fresh characters on TERA and will only use these together, although we also both started separate characters too for solo play. TERA is a totally different MMO in my opinion and is great fun in a group or solo. You chain combos together in battle which is a lot different from clicking or pressing a bunch of keys to do certain moves/actions. You also have to aim where you want your attacks to go, I enjoy TERA a lot more then Archeage but once I had started on Archeage I became hooked again. I continued with Archeage, farming in the public farms and collecting items around the world to continue trade quests I had started. This took around 2 days so I was growing and collecting until late Thursday night. I had collected enough to do the three trade quests I remembered and had looked up in wiki’s on the Internet. Then it came to creating my first trade pack “level too low” I was confused I had the quest and had collected all the items needed, I tried several times each time with the same message. Keeping in mind I started this game at version 1 and had never played since. That was my problem, update to 1.7 had changed all the trade quests meaning I had spent the last 3 days collecting items I don’t need until trade missions are available. I abandoned the mission and gave up returning to TERA which I had been enjoying for a few hours a day with my buddy. We had amassed a lot of gold which we have put in our Guild bank along with a lot of good items. This game is much easier to pick up and there is a lot less busy work. Quest on most MMO’s normally run the same, do something in an area go back to that area a few times and then move on. Archeage takes it to the extreme and you feel like you are stuck in an area for so much longer then is needed, you also get Elite missions popping up which I think are more for groups rather then solo play. I have just removed the elite missions from my quest log, they are impossible on solo. As I still had my accumulated Labour Points from when I first played Archeage I had around 4k at the start of the week. After a few days of playing though I have now ran out of Labour points almost every time I play. This means the only way to play and keep progressing is to pay the subscription fee. I have now started playing until I run of of labour points and move to a different game. As I have ran out of Patron and refuse to pay for more as I feel I am owed 90 days I don’t regen Labour Points unless playing meaning I play for an hour at most before I have ran out of labour points. On TERA I have actually added credit and bough in game items this game doesn’t feel Pay2Win unlike Archeage.

In conclusion Archeage is a great MMO which is let down by its pay2win or pay2play infrastructure. Trion needs to balance the game to keep the F2P players playing and make the game enjoyable to all. If you pay for Patron you should definitely get a bonus like land ownership and more Labour regen. But F2P players get nothing from this game and soon it will be Patron players only. And to be honest if I was going to pay a subscription I wouldn’t be playing Archeage when WoW has so much more.

Although I haven’t said much about TERA the game is an excellent MMO and there is no need to spend cash to progress. You might spend cash like I have but a few £/$/€ a month is nothing compared to a subscription to other MMO’s.

I feel I won’t return to Archeage very often, the game gives so little in return for your time. Maybe if the Labour Point regen changed so F2P players get some when offline then I might return but as it stands now an hour a day is all I can do before I’m out of labour points. I cam spend that our on any other game and actually get somewhere.

    CSGO – Why It Can’t Be F2P

    image

So while playing CSGO the other day someone brought up my skins, they tried to use them as an argument for why CSGO should be free 2 play. His argument was he paid for the game and now HAS to pay for skins. Now the skins in game do nothing to improve any of the weapons, they are just eye candy while you play. Now after 15 minutes of everyone explaining why you don’t NEED to buy skins or open cases he tried to turn the argument around saying if it was free 2 play more people would buy and trade skins. This might actually be a good point but more people would not buy skins meaning the free 2 play game would make no money at all. Micro transactions are the main source of income for a free 2 play game but making a game that the majority won’t spend money on means certain doom for it. During the exchange of words a hacker joined and spined his way around the map getting Headshots. What made it worse is he had a $250 knife needless to say we all reported him and left with the argument still not finished.

The final point I want to make is every time a hacker is caught they are banned from official servers. I still think they can play on private servers but that won’t be fun. If the game was free 2 play they would just make a new account and continue to play and cheat. The small price will be a deterrent for them not to buy or cheat.

    Therefore CSGO can’t be/go free 2 play.

    Wildstar – Now It’s F2P

    image

So I’m not exactly a MMO fan, I had WoW for 3 months but the subscription seemed ludicrous, I only played once a week. I soon tried Wild Star during Alpha and Beta and a little on and after release but again for the amount I played paying a subscription wasn’t on the cards. I did the big mistake on buying an Archage founder pack and that’s £100+ I will never see again. If you tried Wild Star and thought it’s launch was poor the Archage one was three times worse and to this day I still haven’t wanted to return.

Anyway this week Wild Star goes free to play, you can still pay a sub and get added extras but the game is totally free. Everything will be working around cosmic points system but C. R. E. D. D is still there for those who still want to use it. Microtransactions will be the same as most MMO’s mounts and costumes.

I’ll probably redownload and see if it’s still enjoyable over the next month.

Ghost In The Shell: First Strike [Game]

So while on one of my daily Twitter checks I came across the first advert I was actually interested in. I’m a fan of anime/manga and have a few DVD’s and Bluray’s, surprisingly enough I have a few Ghost In The Shell and this is why the advert drew me in. It was a simple advert with little information but it still got my attention.

Now looking at the video it looks graphically stunning and will be free to play, I have played a game that at looks similar called Neo Tokyo which is a standalone mod but based around half life so not the best looking of games.

Just waiting for the beta to Start.
